Made a little progress today. Basically, I rough cut my shapes. I going to hit them with the edge trimmer later this week.

This is going to be my neck pocket template and will probably serve as the template to make my pickup routes. I need to make one more body template to hollow out the body, but I’m out of MDF. I’m going to have to buy another sheet tomorrow. Fortunately, MDF is cheap and easy to cut.

This so-called “birch ply” from Home Despot is pretty splintery. I was tripping off it at first, but after I made a few cuts, I realized there were voids on the wood, so I’m faced with having to do some filling anyway. Next time, I’m going to either A) buy the cheap pine stuff at HD or B) buy the real voidless birch at a real lumberyard.

Here’s all the layers to my bass body. I’m using 3/4″ ply, so the finished will be a teeny bit thick for an ordinary bass body, but I think it will be perfect for that semi-hollow vibe! My only D’oh moment was when I cut both pieces of tempered hardboard facing the same way, so for the back of the bass body, the rough side would be showing. Fortunately, hardboard is cheap and super easy to cut. I had another one knocked out in 10 minutes.

I’m hoping to get to the edge trimming in the next couple of days, but we’ll see. I do most of my work outside, and it looks like we might have a little rain coming our way this week.
